We are getting a high scrap rate after quenching. Could the automatic quenching furnace be the cause?
Yes. If the transfer from furnace to quench tank varies in timing or speed between cycles, the material cools unevenly and scrap goes up. An automatic quenching furnace controls that transfer mechanically, same speed and timing every cycle, which removes that variability.
Manual quenching depends on the operator, so transfer time and entry angle vary. Automation removes that variable. The part enters the quench the same way every time, consistent entry means consistent cooling, and consistent cooling means fewer parts outside tolerance.
Check during a natural break in the cycle, not mid-operation. The quench tank should be at or near ambient temperature before anyone approaches it directly. Use the sight glass or level indicator where available. Never check while hot parts are inside or the sealed atmosphere is still active.
Check level and condition at least weekly for daily use. If the oil looks dark, smells burnt, or quench results are becoming inconsistent, it needs changing. A full oil change once or twice a year is a reasonable starting point for continuous production use.
It prevents oxidation and decarburization during heating. If the surface loses carbon before quenching, hardness after quenching will be lower than required. The sealed atmosphere keeps surface chemistry intact right up to the point of quenching.
